Description
A small authentic jewel of Puglia, Polignano a Mare charms with its winding alleys, enchanting panoramas, and splendid churches and abbeys. Many faithful pilgrims come here to venerate the relics of Saint Vito preserved in the magnificent Abbey of San Vito, dating back to the 10th century AD and built right by the harbor overlooking the sea. Another marvel is the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, housing the Chapel of the martyr Saint Vito and preserving his relics. A visit to the Chapel of the Nativity is also worthwhile, where you can admire the 16th-century sculptural group of the Nativity by local artist Stefano da Putignano, declared a national monument.
